Mylott Manning s first solo exhibition in New York Smash, Crumble and Grind. The show is comprised of work in various media, including performance, installation, sculptural garments and video.

Manning s performances address the unspoken tensions of everyday life and psychological spaces are explored in her installations and sculptures. In this recent body of work, the artist is interested in portraying the act of surfacing inward thoughts and the benefits of their release.

Manning wears a garment constructed out of rabbit shaped chalk pieces and paper during her process-based performance, which takes place throughout the course of the exhibition. She removes and rubs the chalk into powder drawings, shifting the heavy form of the dress into a free and moveable undergarment.

In a series of paintings and prints, the contrast between urban textures and country landscapes are juxtaposed. Deep investigations of longing, struggle and complexity in relationships are masked with humor and bright colors.

In a special piece, which incorporates audio, lighting and performance the artist will demonstrate the excitement of cutting free and letting go. This performance will be held at the artist reception on October 28 at 7 pm.

L. Mylott Manning received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA, from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited at: Mobius, Boston, Massachusetts; Port Moody Arts Centre, Vancouver, Canada; Brooklyn Arts Council, New York; Art in Odd Places/Pedestrian Exhibition, 14th Street, New York; the RISD Biennial, curated by Glen Ligon and Lisa Sigal, New York. Her performances have been reviewed by the Associated Press, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, Time Out New York, and the Columbia Spectator. Manning has also presented her work at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, as part of Fritz Haeg's Sundown Schoolhouse. L. Mylott Manning

Ten10 Studios is pleased to present Collection Compulsive by New York based artists, Liz Conlon and L. Mylott Manning. An opening reception will be held Thursday, November 11, 2010 from 6:30-10:00 pm.

This exhibition brings together two artists that challenge the way the viewer perceives material culture and femininity, through works that reassign meaning to brand symbols and displace domestic items in the public realm.

Both artists' work engages in an exploration of desire, compulsion and collection. Conlon will present a series of paintings and sculptures that relay a satirical interpretation of display culture, advertising and its effect on the human psyche. Manning's videos, stills and sculptural garments included in the show, give a voice to the unspoken tensions of everyday life through a poignant examination of gender identity.

Collection Compulsive is an exhibition with a feminist voice, intertwined with impulse, actions, longing and fantasy. The show will remain on display through November 14, 2010.

Bio:

Liz Conlon is an exhibiting artist and freelance designer. Mylott Manning will discuss the ancient technology of spinning fiber on a traditional spinning wheel, from her unique perspective of a contemporary artist with a background in sculpture, performance and costumes. The process of preparing fiber and spinning yarn will be demonstrated during this hands-on workshop.

Visitors will be invited to participate in a work of art! Bring on old piece of clothing with you to be transformed and memorialized. You will have the opportunity to share a memory that the clothing item carries with it. The artist will cut the cloth into fragments and spin the pieces together with fiber to create a continuous string. Eventually the collective yarn will be hand-knit into a sculptural costume to be worn in a future performance piece. There will also be time for visitors to try the spinning wheel, guided by the artist.

For more information please visit:
http://www.appliedimagination.org/aldrich/index.htm

http://www.fritzhaeg.com/schoolhouse/projects/aldrich-workshops.html

http://www.aldrichart.org/events/?id=885

© L.
